GUEST POST: ‘Clever Distractions’ – By Onyedika Nwoji

Clever distractions are simply what they are…clever distractions! They are clever because they are subtle, sly, cunning, smart, etc. The funny thing about clever distractions are they don’t even look like distractions. In fact, most of them appear really good morally, and even spiritually. Yes! That’s the danger.

One major clever distraction among believers is being BUSY! Busy doing God’s work, ministry, missions, church work & meetings, etc. A few weeks ago, I was listening to a rap song by Andy Mineo titled “Death of Me”, and every time I listen to it, these words from the song always hit me deep:

“Jesus retreated to speak with His Father, I know that I need it.

My career been growing, but tell me where I’m going if my time with God is depleted? (Nowhere)

God I’m sorry, I mean it. All I wanna do is walk with you…

But my priority is wrong, I talk about you more than I talk with you!”

A Reminder To The Christian Feminist…

As we are concerned about issues of equal opportunities and putting an end to patriarchy, sexism, emotional and physical abuse,  we should constantly check our hearts with Christ and put him at the center of all that we are and all we do.
It’s all too easy to get carried away by the mainstream rhetoric and lose touch with our core values as Christians.  Remember love. Remember patience. Remember humility. Remember kindness.
Remember that a strong Christian woman is one who stands courageous in faith and love. It’s not in how loudly you argue, its not in how hard you push yourself in front of everyone.  It’s about understanding your purpose in life and working boldly by God’s grace to fulfill it.
Our feminism is about understanding and accepting our freedom in Christ because we have been made free indeed! It’s about expressing our faith in love and boldly speaking out and using our gifts to glorify the Lord and being a blessing to the world.
Before we are feminists, we are Christians. Re-created in the image and likeness of Christ. Let our attitudes and character reflect this.

Dear Twitter, We Need To Take A Break For A While…

I have wanted to do this for a while but i kept hanging on hoping i’ll get over it somehow. I kept telling myself that i might be overreacting just a little bit but these past few days have brought the clarity that i needed.

I will be taking a break from twitter for some time. I don’t know for how long. Maybe a few days, maybe a few weeks, maybe more. But one thing is certain; it will be long enough for me to clear my head and detox and come back able to handle the cacophony of opinions better than I’ve been handling it. Right now, twitter isn’t just healthy for me.

Dear friends, i am tired. tired of the negativity, the anger, the arguments, the endless debates and threads. It feels like everyone is shouting themselves hoarse just trying to be heard above everyone else. Everybody has an opinion, everyone feels their opinions must be expressed. sometimes in the bid to add our voices to debates and issues that supposedly concern us, we shout others down, we are sarcastic, we are rude, arrogant and insensitive.

I am tired of the endless flood of negative reports and economic and political analysis, i am  tired of reading about killings and reactions to killings. I am tired of political arguments and commentary. tired of religious arguments and twitter fights about gender equality and misogyny. I am tired.

I am tired of scrolling through my twitter timeline and becoming sad for no reason. Twitter has become toxic for me and i can no longer allow that to continue.

Over time i have come  to realize that the information we continually expose our minds to, dictate what we do, say and how we live. That’s why God is very particular about us meditating on his word.

My dears, my mind needs a detox from negativity right now. I’ll be back as soon as God says it’s okay and i can handle it.

I’ll be reachable here and you know you can always click on the “Contact Me” Menu on top of the page and you’ll be able to send me a message.

I’ll also be sharing with you regularly here.

Take care my darlings!

Love you!

Lessons From Grandma; Seal Up The Crack!

My grandmother was fond of proverbs and parables and metaphors. I have since realized that this fondness isn’t peculiar to her. African parents of their generation are specialists in using proverbs and adages to pass down wisdom to the next generation.

One of such proverbs I heard from my grandma is “Without a crack in the wall, the wall gecko wouldn’t find a way into the house”

She said it so often that it became a cliche. Now cliches are dangerous. Because once you identify them as one, you have the tendency to gloss over them, become bored with them and consequently, lose sight of the underlying wisdom.

That’s exactly what happened. I never paid this seemingly tiny morsel of wisdom any mind until I lived the truth of that statement.

“Without a crack in the wall, the wall gecko wouldn’t find a way into the house”

Wall geckos are sly creatures. They can be quite invisible actually because they stay out of your way. Hiding behind closets and curtains and God knows where else.

Winning From The Inside Out

This year is about living purposefully and deliberately. It’s about seeing too. Because everything in the universe might conspire to block your vision from seeing beyond what’s happening right in front of you. But if you look into your spirit, what do you see?

God has just reminded me that every project I’ve ever done that has been successful, I had seen the complete picture in my mind before I even wrote down the idea.

So in moments of doubt, I look inside. What do I see?

I have the mind of Christ the spirit tells me. My mind connects with the spirit and shows me a picture. And then I smile. Because once again, I have won.

I Believe You.

I believe you.

I have had to say that to a human this week and it was a step of faith that was taken in fear, because faith does not always mean the absence of fear, it means acknowledging the fear and deciding not to yield to it.
Honestly, I didn’t even know I was that afraid until I was confronted with the truth.
But I chose faith. And I chose to believe.

About Tim’s Circumcision & The Sacrifice For Purpose

“Paul came first to Derbe, then Lystra. He found a disciple there by the name of Timothy, son of a devout Jewish mother and Greek father. Friends in Lystra and Iconium all said what a fine young man he was. Paul wanted to recruit him for their mission, but first took him aside and circumcised him so he wouldn’t offend the Jews who lived in those parts. They all knew that his father was Greek.”
(ACTS 16:1-3MSG)
Why did Paul have to circumcise Timothy before taking him along on his missionary journey? After all, the elders of the church had established earlier that non Jewish believers don’t need circumcision to be accepted by God.
Paul was reaching out to the Jewish community in Greece. Everyone in that community knows that Timothy’s father was Greek. Paul understood the controversy and debate that would bring and to avoid distraction from the message, he did what was needful.

Emotional Abuse; Spot The Signs & Run!

So many women (and men) are in emotionally abusive relationships and they don’t even realize it. So many don’t know because they don’t realize the implications of what is being done to them.

Emotional abuse leaves deeper scars than physical abuse. because your mind is attacked. In almost all cases of physical abuse, emotional abuse usually starts long before the physical assaults.

In case you have not been paying attention, here are some signs of an emotionally abusive relationship. I’m addressing women here but it also applies to men too. So, read with understanding..

Yes, You Can & You Should Pray For Bae!

This is not really meant to be a ‘relationship or marriage coach’ kinda post. (Apologies in advance if it reads like that).
I just really want to share about how important prayer is in our relationship with our partners. Whether married, engaged or dating, if you’re in love and romantically involved with someone, you cannot take prayer out of the relationship.

Let me start by saying that if you do not have the confidence to bear down to talk to God about the person you’re with, you might want to check the foundations of that relationship and be honest with yourself if you should be with that person.

See, God loves love. Yes he does! He’s the author of love. In fact he is LOVE himself! So God loves the fact that you are in love with someone and he’s willing to help you navigate the ups and downs of unconditionally loving another imperfect human like yourself.
