I woke up this morning to see this quote, and as usual, the instinctive response was to click “like” and move on. But then it stayed on my mind and i realized that God wanted me to think about it.
How easy it is to take the back seat? In a world and society where you are expected, instructed and advised to promote yourself, push yourself forward and put yourself first above all others.
Does it mean because we are Christians, we should become un-ambitious and take a back seat from opportunities? No. It’s godly to be successful and be assertive but all ambition should be guided by the Holy Spirit. As God’s children, we should allow him lead us and our desires put under the microscope of the word of God.
For those of us in the creative, media and entertainment industry, I’m not going to pretend that this is easy to do. The whole industry is about pushing your image, and drawing attention to yourself. Is this sinful? Professional PR and publicity is not. It comes with the job.
But what is the state of your heart as you publicize your work? Who is getting glorified? When your face and your work is spread abroad, and your heart swells with pride, do you remember who brought you there? Do you remember WHY you have been given that platform? Does your success point your fans to God or to you?
Philippians 2:1-4 (NLT)
1-4 If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favour: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.
