Sometimes we’re too quick to decide that someone somewhere is holding us back from making progress and fulfilling our purpose in God. I admit, it’s a very convenient place for us to be, because then, we have this defensive attitude and can easily point to “reasons” why we are not where we should be.
Even as a preacher, i must say it makes for a really good sermon too. It’s easier to get people nodding and saying Amen when they hear about the “enemies” and “haters” holding them back from their bright future.
However, it isn’t always true. Not in all cases. A lot of people, (maybe including you) are held back by themselves. You are holding you back!
The Mrs. Lot Syndrome: Mrs Lot had a great gig going in sodom and Gomorrah. She was rich, she had friends and jewellery. Unfortunately those things are so important to her that when she had to leave them behind, it was too hard to do. She just had to look back.
Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising over the horizon. 24 Then the Lordrained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.
You can’t run forward while looking back. If what you’re gonna have to let go to follow Jesus is too much for you to give up, you will always be held back by those things. To follow the master, you must be willing to drop all baggage. Remember when Jesus called the disciples? They all left what they were doing to follow him. Elisha abandoned his thriving agricultural business to follow Elijah. (See 1 Kings 19: 19 – 21 and Luke 18:24-34)
I’m not saying you have to quit your job or quit school if you want to follow Jesus. All im saying is, you will have to make sacrifices, a lot of times, and you will have to abandon your own plans for his own. And guess what? When you give him your dreams, he will make it bigger than you ever imagined and make it happen!
Jeremiah 29:11 (MSG)
….I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.
Don’t hold yourself back because you can’t see beyond the temporary pleasures and attractions of this life. God has bigger plans for you. But you have to trust him and step out in faith. He might not show you the whole picture, you might feel like you’re in a puzzle and you don’t have all the pieces, but he does that to teach you patience and help your faith grow.
All you need to know is that he loves you and he has great plans for you. So drop every baggage, let go of everything slowing you down, ( you know these things) and follow Jesus. Let him move you forward!
John 15: 5 – 8 (MSG)
5-8 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is—when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.
