Do you know why a lot of people get really hurt in relationships? It’s because human love is inherently selfish. People look toward themselves for love and acceptance, and they keep searching for the validation of their existence in other human beings. Unfortunately, they can never find it.
Get this: You can never find unconditional love and acceptance in another human being; be it your parents, your spouse, or your friends. The kind of love that the human heart desires and craves, the fulfillment and satisfaction and acceptance that your soul truly seeks can only be found in God. And until you recognize what the savior has done and embraced it, there will always be an empty hole that you’re desperately trying to fill with all sorts of substitutes, and it won’t work.
Nothing can substitute God’s love in your heart. God loves you. We say it in present continuous tense because he always has, and he always will.
When you’re not conscious of that fact, you’re always going to look for fillers; and these fillers will never last. God can ‘outlove’ anybody in your life. Human beings love you for a reason, but God doesn’t need a reason to love you. He loves you because you exist. He made you. And as your maker, you’re part of him; made especially to look and be like him; so loving you is part of who he is.
Don’t let human love be the “be all and end all” of your life. Recognize that human love is fundamentally flawed, so expect to be hurt and be ready to understand and forgive.
Above all, know deeply in your heart that nothing will ever separate you from God’s love.
Romans 8:38 (NLT)
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
