Do You Need to “Blend In” ?

Yeah, I bet you probably read that or hear that a lot!  Every motivational speaker says “Don’t blend in” “stand out”  “be unique”,  “be different” etc.  of course you don’t need me to tell you how difficult that can be. It’s easy in theory, but living up to it is a whole different ball game.

I mean, look around you.  When you turn on the TV, the Radio, go on the internet, everyone seems to be doing the same thing. The music is the same, the outfits are the same, even the opinions are the same more often than not!  Of course I understand why you would want to blend in. after all, no one wants to be called the weird one right? And it does get lonely when you look different, act different, think different and talk different.

You know what? I’m gonna join my voice to the chorus. Don’t bend in! But I won’t just say it, I’ll tell you why you can’t blend in, and how not to blend in!

One thing you need to know is, as a Christian, you’re already different. You don’t need to struggle to be different. The moment you accepted Christ, you were re-created to be different. Check this out:

 Deuteronomy 14:2

You have been set apart as holy to the Lord your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure.

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 1:23 (NLT)

23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.

See? You have a new life now! You are DIFFERENT already!  You have a brand new life.  A supernatural one that comes from God himself.  You’re not just anybody, you’re special!

Now, let’s talk about why you can’t afford to blend in.

Romans 12:2 (NLT)

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

This is God’s instruction. We are not to “Copy the behavior and customs” of the world we live in.  it’s a directive for your own good believe me.  Look at the moral decadence and rebellion prevalent in the society today.  Do you honestly feel that’s a better way to live? Of course not!

To avoid blending in, you must embrace the new life in you and be open to changing your mindset and perspectives about things around you. That’s where the word of God comes in handy. There are laid down principles in the bible to help you through this, and to clear your confusion. Just spend time studying and doing what it says. You will begin to see changes in the way you think and relate with the world around you.

Colossians 3:1-3 (NLT)

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God

The whole 3rd chapter of Colossians is full of wonderful insight on how to live your everyday life according to the new life of God inside you.  The word of God is a mirror. It shows us who we are. Study that chapter in everyday English version ( I recommend the New Living Translation). Whatever you read there, is a reflection of who you are created to be. So start living it! Don’t blend in!

  1. real truth Fola. If only we know as Christians that if we refuse to blend in they will eventually after secretly admired us, pronounce their respect for us. Check this out have u ever seen an eagle amongst sparrows? Never he is conscious of his identity. Only a vulture eat dead animals eagles don’t. We are eagle. Matt5:13-16 gave a clear definition of us as Christians, LIGHT OFTHE WORLD, SALT OF THE EARTH, even A CITY BUILT ON A HILL THAT CANT BE HID. that for me makes a lot sense. Thanks for such a wonderful writeup.
